Gruumsh Must Be Crazy Part IV

Gruumsh Must Be Crazy Part IV

We'd hardly gone more than a mile into the forest when we were set upon by some pesky druids and their pets while trying to make our way down a cliff via a giant tree.

They had us trapped. One wrong step would lead to a long fall into oblivion.

Since we were on a mission from Gruumsh, there was really only one viable choice ... fight to the death!

When the wolves pounced, Zissiren and I went back-to-back in hopes of fending them off before the elf chick could tangle us up in vines or something equally annoying.

Trog, meanwhile, stood protectively in front of Trixie and laid into the bear with his trusty club as it came charging for him, while Trixie prayed to Tiamat to make that other druid's antlers fall off (or something, I wasn't really paying attention).

I managed to slice through the skull of the wolf attacking me, but not before it scratched up my bare foot with its claws. Zissiren, on the other hand, did some tricky maneuver that sent his wolf howling off the edge of the tree branch. The elf chick looked a bit taken aback and hesitated, which was all the opening we needed. She never stood a chance.

The bear's claws proved pretty ineffectual against Trog's tough hide and it didn't last long before it was clubbed to the ground, at which point we discovered it had been another druid as the bear's corpse shifted back into humanoid form.

That left just the dude with the antlers on his head. He was like the head druid of the area or something. When he saw what we'd done, he tried summoning up a lightning storm, but Trixie countered that with an earthquake that actually did knock his antlers off his head. They went tumbling over the edge.

He stared dumbfounded, only to find himself swiftly tumbling after them with one mighty swing from Trog's club.

We shoved the other bodies over the edge and continued on our merry way.

Gruumsh Must Be Crazy Part III

Gruumsh Must Be Crazy Part III

Our descent from the mountain was slow going and the sun rose before we had made it down, which was just as well as we stumbled across a waterfall that we never would've been able to cross in the dark.

As it is, Trog was scared out of his wits and refused to cross until Trixie suggested we tie ourselves together with Zissiren's rope (note to all would-be adventurers: you may never find a use for that 10-foot pole you've been lugging around, but you'll never run out of uses for a stury 50-foot length of rope!).

That seemed to satisfy Trog, so after roping up, we gingerly made our way across the rushing water. We had a close call when Trog was about halfway across but he managed to make it without going over the edge.

He may be built like a rock, but I doubt even he could've survived going down that waterfall ...

Gruumsh Must Be Crazy Part II

Gruumsh Must Be Crazy Part II

When I told the others about my mission, they were pretty keen to come with me. That was a relief.

Zissiren wanted to know why we couldn't just throw the artifact in one of the many lava rivers or bottomless pits in the underdark somewhere, but I vetoed that idea. My dad was adamant that Gruumsh wanted it dropped off the edge of the world. Trixie backed me up on that, murmuring something about Tiamat agreeing that that was what needed to be done.

Anyway, so first we had to find our way out of the underdark. It's not always as easy as it might seem. Turns out we took a wrong turn somewhere and ran into some dwarves patrolling one of their ancient, ruined underground highways. We must have strayed too close to one of their nests.

This patrol had a magic user with them. They looked pretty threatening, but they turned out to be a bit of a disappointment. Trog and I engaged the two dwarf warriors while Trixie distracted the magic user long enough for Zissiren to get in behind him and cut his throat.

After it was all over, Trixie astutely pointed out that if we were close enough to a dwarf nest to hit a patrol, then that would mean we were also fairly close to the surface. We had to take a bit of a circuitous route so as not to stumble right into the main group of dwarves, but we eventually managed to find an exit in the side of mountain with a trail leading down into a massive forest. We waited until the sun set and then set off towards the woods, not knowing what we'd find down there.

To make the whiteboard combats simple, I chose one monster of the group's level and made the PC's fight five of them.

Gruumsh Must Be Crazy Part I

Gruumsh Must Be Crazy Part I

Hey, it's me, Pralg. Remember me? I've got a new story to tell you ...

So one day me and my friends were terrorizing some dwarf kids who'd gotten lost in the underdark when I got summoned home cos Dad wanted to see me.

He was waiting by the Unholy Font of Gruumsh's Tears (I think it was once sacred to some pansy dwarf god, but Dad rededicated it to Gruumsh after we slaughtered the god's followers and took over their halls).

He informed me that the tribe had found an ancient magical artifact that was too dangerous to keep around. Too many of our enemies would try to steal it and use it against us, but at the same time, it was too risky to try and use it ourselves, so the next best thing was to find a brave volunteer to take it and throw it off the edge of the world.

As it turns out, that brave volunteer would be me.

To be honest, I couldn't see anything special about the artifact. It just looked like an empty glass bottle. In fact, I was tempted to just take it and try to sell it for a few gold pieces - it looked like an antique and I figured it might be worth something to someone who valued that sort of thing.

But no, Dad was adamant that Gruumsh wanted it destroyed and that he wanted me to be the one to do it.

Sigh ...

At least I won't be alone. Dad said the guys could come with me.
