The Examiner has coverage of "The Future of D&D" from GENCon
The second major revelation was that the entire back catalogue of Dungeons & Dragons products would eventually be released in a digital format. Twitter fans noticed that they didn't say "PDF" only "electronic format." I confirmed this with the Wizards team afterwards -- they did NOT say PDFs, only a "electronic format" that's still in the works. So we'll see what form it takes. Of course, I've been predicting this outcome since the admitted goal of the new edition was to monetize the old editions, something WOTC can't do without actually selling the older editions.
I'm still sceptical about anything to do with WotC and the word digital. But releasing everything electronically is probably a step in the right direction. I say probably because the wording in the above quote leaves lots of wiggle room for insane corporate lawyer bullshit. 'Nuff said.
Greenwood took over to explain the world-shattering events in store for the Forgotten Realms... It's title: The Sundering
Everytime a new edition is released there must be some kind of cataclysm or disaster that changes the universe for ever. Of course I think they should just call it "The Releasing" instead. Then it would have "meta" connotations! :)
It also looks like they are going to release in two years, just in time for the 40th anniversary of D&D. That will have given 4E (released in 2008) about 6 years of shelf live. In my opinion, it wasn't really a whole game until at least a year later after a number if vital supplements were released. You can't have D&D unless Druids exist (Players Handbook II - March 2009! I should point out that Newbie DM used a crystal ball back in 2011 and predicted lots of this with scary accuracy. Nice going Newbie!
Also, WotC has released a brand new playtest packet that includes a whole lot of new stuff. There is quite a bit more character information. I'll skip the summary. Just go get it and read it for yourself!
The Lords of Tyr are playing the playtest and will shortly start up our podcasts again! Stay tuned!
