How to Rock it Out with Character Creator – Tools and Utilities

We had a TPK (Total Party Kill) last month in our 4E game. It was horrible. We just went down like dominos. Needless to say we all started work on new characters. I created an Elf named Verasis. I thought it would be fun to try an Essentials character so I chose the Sentinal Druid. It is a leader focused class rather than the usual controller roll that typical Druids fill.

Much to my surprise as I logged into the Character Builder, I saw that it now supports exporting! The files are just simple XML files. They look to be exactly the same as the previous format. This is great because it allows people to once again use simple tools like XSL style sheets and HTML to display custom character sheets. It also allows people to publish their characters on forums and send them to their DM's.

Let's look at some tools available to players out there.

D&D Virtual Table Beta Open to All DDI Subscribers

The D&D Virtual Table Beta is now open to all DDI subscribers... who have opted in to receive communications that is.

From the Wizards Community Broadcast:

For those that were recently in the D&D Virtual Table beta or following the info, you'll know that we're moving into the next stage of testing. In this next stage we will be inviting all current DDI members who have opted in to receive communications from us. If you are a DDI subscriber and want to take advantage of this opportunity and help us test the VT, make sure you have followed these steps and are opted in.

Are you going to try it? I certainly am! In fact, I'll be working on a head to head review of the D&D Virtual Table Beta and MapTool. I'm really excited to see how the tool works and what I can do with it.

Remote gaming has never been as good as it is now. Computers are a part of all of the Lords of Tyr games, and have been for quite some time. Sure putting a video camera over our miniatures table worked... kind of. But now the tools are so much better and interactive. Are you incorporating technology into your games? The Wizards of the Coast's Virtual Table is already in beta. But why wait! Get your digital game table on right now!

The future is now. This isn't 1983 anymore people. Technology is here, and if we want these games to survive for the next generation of gamers we need to be integrating the modern world into the game.

But D&D is a pen and paper game! But I like carrying around 30 pounds of books! But I like to memorize every crazy little rule and exception and I read all the errata because I have lots of time on my hands!

What are you people waiting for! A zombie apocolypse to come and wipe out the modern world so we can play with hand carved wooden dice “like we did back in the old days sonny”?

Well! Its been a while. The holidays was crazy busy for all of the Lords of Tyr. While we pride ourselves on being gamers. We also pride ourselves on having a healthy attitude about putting real life first. Friends and family are important. While we didn't game very much in November and December, and we certainly didn't podcast much, we did manage to get together for some outings. Mostly we had some great time with our families.

DDI Update Release Finally!

If you are a DDI subscriber they you should have already recieved an email of the broadcast that was sent on the D&D Community Web Site. If not, head on over to the forums and read the official post about this much anticipated update. I know there were a lot of frustrated Dark Sun and Essentials players out there that have not been able to use the charcter builder... and they will still be frustrated.

The Character Builder is only being updated with Psionic Power, Dragon 389 & 390, and Dungeon 180 & 181. No Dark Sun. No Essentials

The online Compendium is being updated with Psionic Power, Dark Sun and Essentials: Heroes of the Fallen Land, Dragon 389 & 390, and Dungeon 180.
